Fluency Activities for your Structured Literacy Classroom

Welcome back! Yesterday, I shared some information to help you better understand reading fluency. If you missed that post, you can still access it here.

Today, I am showcasing some of my favorite fluency-building materials, including a couple of freebies!

My students love using these, and I love the transition through words, phrases, sentences, and passages that helps to seamlessly build automatic word recognition with each individual skill.

Even better, I have updated these products to include a comprehension component for each reading passage! Hopefully, this will enable you to consistently monitor your students' skill-based reading fluency and comprehension -as well as the connection between their performance in both areas.

This bundle contains hands-on materials for building fluency. However, it's a growing bundle, which means the product will continue to expand to include materials for even more syllable types and/or spelling patterns. (But once you purchase the bundle, you gain access to any materials added in the future at no additional cost!)

These materials are aligned with the science of reading and are based on the Orton-Gillingham approach for reading instruction. They are designed to provide tactile experiences with phonics skills.

Currently, the bundle includes several of my 5-Star rated products and includes the following phonics skills:

* Consonant Digraphs (ch, sh, th, wh, ph, -ck)

* Words that end with -tch and -dge

* R-Controlled Syllable patterns (ar, er, ir, or, ur)

* Closed Syllables

* Open Syllables

* The Suffix -tion

* Vowel Teams

* Magic E

Within each product, the following materials are provided that reflect fluency-building exercises with the targeted phonics skill:

Of course, you don't have to invest in the full bundle; the individual products are available if you only need one or two skills!

Fluency Freebies:

As promised, here are a couple of great free options to add to your teacher toolkit!

Sample the fluency-building materials described in this post with this freebie! These materials target the consonant digraph -ck. Click the image or here to download it!

Help your students set personal goals and highlight their own progress with these fluency graphs! But remember: The rate of reading is only ONE MEASURE of fluency. So whenever I address the concept of fluent reading with my students, I am careful to stress that they always do their best reading and that their oral reading should be comfortable, much like having a conversation with the text. It's not a race; it's not about speed.

Thanks for visiting me here today! If you use any of these products, please let me know how they work for you and your students. I always appreciate the feedback.

More to come! :)
