Not sure how to help your struggling readers and writers? I've got everything you need for your phonics interventions! I'm sharing a resource you can trust to provide structured reading and spelling interventions for your students.

Use these materials as your primary resource for phonics interventions, or use them to supplement your current phonics program. Either way, you can't go wrong! These materials are ready-to-use, (just print and go!) phonics-based, and suitable for interventions or small-group instruction.

What you need to know (and teaching tips!):

Orton Gillingham methodology focuses on systematic phonics instruction that revolves around syllable types as well as the phonics rules for each type of syllable. The more fluent students become with each skill, the less they struggle to decode words (especially multisyllabic words). Naturally, this translates into their spelling abilities as well.

Effective phonics instruction should include multisensory opportunities as much as possible. I talk with my students a lot about using "touch points" to help sound out words. Some teachers discourage students from using their fingers to track print, but for struggling readers, simply adding the sense of touch can help support speech-to-print associations!

I ofent provide touch points for students as they develop reading fluency at the word-level. There should be a gradual release of dependency on touch points, but developing that tactile strategy is a powerful tool for students in the early stages! I implemented that philosophy into these materials.

The same philosophy applies to developing spelling fluency!

It's important to support students' development of phonemic awareness, but if they already have a stable foundation, you can continue to foster the speech-to-print connection by providing a visual guide for the sounds within each word. Again, you want to foster a gradual release of dependency on those visual cues.

These materials support the reading-writing connection with this simple, but effective, 3-step process:

  1. Students decode each word.

  2. Visual cues for the individual sounds within each word help students spell sound-by-sound.

  3. Visual cues are removed, and students spell the word as a cohesive unit of meaning.

Remember, you have to explicitly teach phonics rules! The instruction must be consistent and sequential. (That's a "fancy" way of saying that you have to teach the skills thoroughly, maintaining a similar method in your delivery, and you have to teach the skills in an order that makes sense.)

You may have an awesome phonics program that takes care of this for you. If you do, super! Whatever your current phonics "program" looks like, it is always helpful to have ready-to-use materials on hand that will easily supplement the skills you are teaching. Here's a preview of some of the great resources included in my Phonics Intervention Materials for Reading and Spelling.

Not only this, but it's included in a bundle along with other materials that will all work together cohesively to enrich your phonics instruction. The reading passages are fantastic alone, but I wrote them with the purpose of being used with these phonics materials.

Don't just take my word for it, though; see what other teachers have had to say about these materials!
